Rabbi's Weekly Message - September 1, 2010

If you have not yet registered your student(s) for the Block Family Religious School, please do so.  You can call or drop by the Temple office for registration forms.  Please note that the first day of school is Sunday September 12.

We open the formal penitential season this Saturday night with our Selichot service at midnight.  That will be preceded by a pot luck dessert at 11 PM.

Erev Rosh Hashanah services are Wednesday, September 8 at 8 PM. Rosh Hashanah morning services are Thursday, September 9 at 10 AM.

This week’s parashah, Nitzavim, opens with the words, “You stand here today, all of you.”  The word for “stand” is the Hebrew word that names the portion, nitzavim.  It implies an attentiveness to purpose.  The Chasidic commentator Itturei Torah says that at this moment, as all of Israel is standing very attentively with Moses before God, they are on the same spiritual plane as Moses was when he received the Torah from God.  There is at this moment for all of Israel, no veil or barrier separating them from God.  Further, every member of the community is standing together, from the tribal heads and judges to the common laborer and even the children.  We are only a few days away from Rosh Hashanah when, indeed we stand attentively, before God.  We do this in the context of a community which contains people of all stations, all kinds of professions, from the oldest to the youngest.  It is hoped that we will stand without a veil between us and God, that we attain, however briefly, a high spiritual level that allows us to be open to God, to the process of judgment.  This can be a rather daunting, scary thought—to lay ourselves open  to judgment.  Yet “letting go” of our baggage is what we are supposed to do during the High Holidays.   May we celebrate the New Year together,  supporting each other, helping each other to stand before God.

Shabbat shalom and shanah tovah u’metukah,

Jack Romberg
Rabbi

Cafe Shalom

Be sure to stop by for Cafe Shalom.  We are open during religious school from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on Sundays and 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays.  We'll follow the religious school calendar and will be closed during summers and vacations.

We've made this a warm, cozy place for people to relax, chat with other Temple members or just sit and read the paper.  We serve coffee, tea, bagels and sweets for a small donation.  We hope parents will take advantage of this great opportunity while their kids are in class.

If you'd like to be a host at the cafe on Sunday morning or Wednesday evening, contact Terry Kant-Rauch.  We are also looking for people to bake desserts.  If you are willing to whip up some cookies, muffins, or other treats, get in touch with Terry.

Thank you... the Cafe Shalom committee.
