Temple Israel has a wide range of service programs that target both local and foreign projects.

In our greater Tallahassee community, Temple Israel prepares and serves dinners at The Shelter downtown, delivers Meals-on Wheels each Labor Day, and works hundreds of hours collectively in the spring in conjunction with our annual Mitzvah Day project.

We also support our own congregants in need by bringing Shabbat meals of comfort for those who have recently experienced the death of family members, are recuperating from illness or surgery, or more on the upside, are adjusting to a new birth or adoption.

In addition, our Israel subcommittee has "adopted" an Israeli orphanage and our Tallit Sewing Circle uses its revenues to support the Jewish World Service.

New projects are always in the works, and the committee very much welcomes new, enthusiastic members!

Sustainable Torah Gardens

The May 2008 Board of Trustees approved the plan described in the powerpoint presentation posted here.

The mission of the garden is threefold:

(1)    to nourish one's spirit through appreciation of nature's beauty and bounty;

(2)    to engage in acts of mitzvot through cultivating, harvesting and sharing the garden's bounty; and

(3)    to develop feelings of compassion and tolerance through working with others in the garden and practicing lessons of environmental sustainability.

Over a ten-year period, five components of the garden will be created by our congregation:

·          Bereshit Memorial Garden (planning and implementation begins this year)

·          Shemot Rain and Butterfly Gardens

·          Vayyiqra Learning Center

·          Bamidbar Promised Land Vegetable Garden (first to be created!)

·          Devarim Meditation Garden

The initial work of clearing the old vegetable garden and preparing the soil for planting

family-size raised gardens will begin in July 2008. An orientation session will be held at the Religious School orientation on August 17, 2008. Classes in sustainable square-foot gardening will be held in the fall.

TEAM and Social Justice

We need you on the TEAM to address injustices in Tallahassee

TEAM is a congregation-based community organization comprised of 18 faith groups united to hold local leaders/systems accountable to their intended purposes. TEAM brings diverse people together (racial, ethnic, social/economic, faith) to address community concerns that affect poor and low-income people. TEAM does not perform direct service or "band-aid" fixes, but rather, identifies institutional changes that will impact an entire community problem. TEAM began as a response to injustice and inequality in Tallahassee and Temple Israel has been participating since its inception, now in our third year.

Earlier this year each faith group, including Temple Israel, participated in a community wide Listening Process. At Temple we hosted house meetings where Temple congregants identified the most important issues of concern to us. All the congregations then assembled in June to choose the priority TEAM issues for the year: Transportation, Healthcare and continuing efforts with the Change for Change program, which funds housing and helps the homeless.

TEAM leaders formed research committees of 20-30 people who are trained to identify specific problems within their identified focus area and then find tangible, winnable solutions. Committee members are working now with organizations that are direct service providers, professionals and local leaders in each concern area. After months of research, dialogue, and raising questions, the committees are identifying specific issues and targeted proposals to alleviate the respective needs.

You can learn more about TEAM at their website: www.teamtally.org. For information about Temple Israel’s involvement in TEAM, call Barry Moline: Days: 224-3314, ext. 1, Evenings: 894-4234, or send him an email at bmoline@publicpower.com.
