Mitzvah Day -- April 19, 2009

MITZVAH DAY – APRIL 19, 2009

Inserted in our Temple Times and posted on this website is the final list of projects for Mitzvah Day.  As you can see the projects cover a variety of activities and agencies.  There is something for everyone, so sign up now!!!   Students can get community service credit.   As Rabbi stated in his February article, this is a wonderful opportunity to become a charged God particle.  Just fill out the Volunteer Registration form, include a check (made out to Temple Israel) with your fees and mail or drop it off at the Temple.  Let’s all make the return of Mitzvah Day a huge success!!!

Clothing and Food Donations

In addition to our many volunteer opportunities, we will be running a special Spring Collection Drive.

Please give us freshly laundered used clothing when you come to Mitzvah Day.  We will be giving the clothes to the Refuge House Thrift Shop.  I want to thank Isaac Bakan for this Temple-wide Mitzvah Day project.

The Professional Clothes Drive is ongoing!  Please take your clothes to be cleaned at Custom Care Dry Cleaning, 2522 Capital Circle Northeast, Tallahassee FL 32308, or bring your drycleaned men's or women's professional clothes to Mitzvah Day.   These clothes will also be donated to the Refuge House Thrift Shop.

We will also be accepting NEW towels and sheets for Refuge House (they cannot accept used towels and sheets).

Food donations are also needed.   Our ECHO Mitzvah Day project volunteers will be organizing the food warehouse and we ask you to bring donations of canned tuna, meats, box cereal, small jars of peanut butter, canned fruit, for example.  Our ECHO team will deliver your donations to ECHO that day.

Please contact Mary Mccormick, mmccormi@yahoo.com for more information.

Many of our mitzvah projects are currently listed on the main Social Action page. Click here to see that page.

A Word About Mitzvot from Rabbi Romberg

Long before Oprah ever spoke about random acts of kindess, a Jewish sage wrote the words, "mitzvah goreret mitzvah," one mitzvah leads to another mitzvah.  One person's single deed may in and of itself seem relatively minor; but when connected to a chain of good deeds the act or mitzvah gains in significance.  Doing mitzvot is the Jew's way of bringing the presence of God into the world.  Our individual and collective link in the chain of mitzvot is, in fact, very important.

We are asking you to participate in this chain of mitzvot.  On Sunday, April 19th, Temple Israel will offer you the opportunity to perform a mitzvah with fellow Temple members, in ways that enable you to see and feel the connection with the greater community and greater good.  Our Planning Committee has worked hard to "set the stage" for our 6th Mitzvah Day; now it is up to each of you to make it happen by volunteering for an important community project.  I look forward to sharing the performance of mitzvot with all of you.

B'shalom,

Rabbi Jack Romberg
