A message from the Temple Israel Social Justice Team:
We have all heard about the famous deportation flights of Venezuelans and Kilmar Abrego Garcia to a concentration camp in El Salvador in violation of a court’s order.  But did you know there have been a 1000 such flights in the past few months?

We all know about Alligator Alcatraz, but did you know that the Washington Post reports that ICE is planning to open or expand 125 new “detention facilities” across the country, including ones to hold families, giving America the largest prison system in the world?

We’ve all seen ICE raids on TV.  Masked men with “uniforms” and guns arresting people outside a Home Depot or at a construction site or just roaming the streets of American cities.  But did you know that last week ICE detained a mentally challenged 15 year old American citizen while he was on his way to school because they “made a mistake?”  Did you know that a 4 year old in the middle of cancer treatment was deported without his mother?

This horror is going on across the country but many Americans don’t know….not because they don’t care but because our main stream media aren’t reporting on the frequency and breadth of the raids.  How many detained immigrants are the “worst of the worst?”  How many detained immigrants were offered due process?  How many detained immigrants were arrested while making their required court visits as they seek citizenship or a Green Card?

The Religious Action Center (RAC) of the URJ knows these facts and they have decided to focus on immigration as the central core of their social justice programming.  The Temple Israel Social Justice Team has proudly joined forces with RAC to educate our community and to work in coordination with other faith and local advocacy groups who are doing the work of ending this madness.

Please join us for a kick off meeting of Social Justice in Action on September 8th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Temple.  We will feature our own Alla Holmes who will share her work at the national level with the Acacia Center for Justice and we will also hear from Erika Nyborg-Burch who runs the Immigration Rights project at the FSU College of Law who will give us more  specific information about what’s happening right in our own community.  A light meal will be served so we’re asking you to RSVP here!
