Adult Education

At Temple Israel our goal is to provide interesting and informative programs to enrich your Jewish learning.

Adult Education Classes

Join us this spring as we offer 3 different educational classes! Each class and their description is listed below. Please check the box next to each class that you would like to attend.

This course is a continuation of the fall, 2019 Beginning Hebrew for Adults class and will continue with a completion of the Hebrew alphabet and vowels, letter combinations and vocabulary.

Prerequisite:

Either completion of a Temple Israel Beginning Hebrew Course or a working knowledge of elementary Hebrew

Join Morah Stefanie Posner before services on Friday evenings to discover the words that make up our liturgy. You'll learn to recognize common words and feel more comfortable navigating services.

In this three week class led by our Education Director, Morah Stefanie Posner, participants will receive an introduction to Jewish values, spirituality and customs. This class is for people of all faiths who may have an interest in beginning studies for conversion to Judaism.

Ongoing Programs

Weekly Tanach Study - On Saturdays beginning at 9:00 AM in the Adult Education Room, join a dedicated group for a close examination and discussion of the Torah. We are conducting the study on a verse-by-verse basis. No prior knowledge of Hebrew is required. The class is instructed in a way that makes it easy to drop in. Books are provided.

Talmud Study- Mondays at 12 PM. Delve into the teachings of the Sages with Rabbi Shields and Stefanie Posner.  Experience in Torah study is helpful but not required. All learners are welcome.

Lunch and Learn - Wednesdays at noon, bring a brown bag lunch and a penchant for spirited discussion and join Rabbi Shields in the Temple Adult Education Room. Lunch and Learn has covered a wide range of Jewish texts. We will shape our future learning together based on the interests of participants.

Hebrew Reading Circle - This circle has been meeting weekly for several years to read simplified Hebrew texts from modern Hebrew literature. Newcomers welcome. Call (850) 385-1538 to speak with Rabbi Stanley Garfein. The group meets Sundays at 11:00 AM at the home of Rabbi Garfein.

Tallahassee Jewish Genealogical Society - The Society meets once quarterly for programs that involve the sharing of family histories and trees that have been recovered after years of nepenthe (forgetfulness). Membership is $5. Contact Rabbi Garfein at (850) 385-1538 for more information. Meets Sundays at 2:00 PM, quarterly, in the Adult Education room.
