Adult Education

At Temple Israel our goal is to provide interesting and informative programs to enrich your Jewish learning.

 

Adult Education Classes

                                                                                                                                    Introduction to Judaism- *Date to be confirmed* Learn the fundamentals of Jewish thought and practice in 16-20 weeks. This course is perfect for interfaith couples, those from different faith backgrounds, those considering conversion, and Jews looking for an adult-level introduction.  The class is hosted by Temple Israel and led by the Rabbi. Fee: $215 per person/$260 per couple (fee includes books and materials).

Marc Chagall- His Life and Works- Led by Natalie Kudrashova. Learn about the life and study some of the work of one of the most popular Jewish artists, Marc Chagall. Free. Tuesday, 9/3 at 3 PM.

Hebrew For Beginners- Led by Bob Canter, our Hebrew class is the perfect course for those with little or no Hebrew background. We'll review the Hebrew alphabet and vowels, practice letter recognition and pronunciation, and other aspects of Hebrew in a fun and non-intimidating manner. Mondays at 6:30 PM starting 10/14. 8 week course. $36.

The Fragility of our Interfaith Future- Led by Rabbi Shields.  How do we Transform the Promising Present into a Meaningful and Holy Future? Together we will explore who we are, how we have been perceived/labeled by our Christian neighbors over the ages, the resulting harm and heartache, the importance of Modern Israel for both Jews and Christians, and how we proceed now that Islam is a part of our 3-way interreligious intersection of faith. Tuesdays at 2 PM starting 10/15. 5 week course.$36

The Yemenite Jewish Kitchen- Instructed by our Education Director, Stefanie Posner. Explore the flavors of Yemenite cuisine that have become the staple of many classic Mizrahi dishes. From Zhug to Hilbeh, you'll learn how to make it from scratch. Monday 12/9 at 6 PM.  $36.

Regularly scheduled classes (Introduction to Judaism, and the various Hebrew classes), take place once a year, at around the same time. If you missed this year's session, don't forget to sign up next year.

Ongoing Programs

Weekly Tanach Study - On Saturdays beginning at 9:00 AM in the Adult Education Room, join a dedicated group for a close examination and discussion of the Torah. We are conducting the study on a verse-by-verse basis. No prior knowledge of Hebrew is required. The class is instructed in a way that makes it easy to drop in. Books are provided.

Talmud Study- Mondays at 12 PM. Delve into the teachings of the Sages with Rabbi Shields and Stefanie Posner.  Experience in Torah study is helpful but not required. All learners are welcome.  

Lunch and Learn - Wednesdays at noon, bring a brown bag lunch and a penchant for spirited discussion and join Rabbi Shields in the Temple Adult Education Room. Lunch and Learn has covered a wide range of Jewish texts. We will shape our future learning together based on the interests of participants. 

Hebrew Reading Circle - This circle has been meeting weekly for several years to read simplified Hebrew texts from modern Hebrew literature. Newcomers welcome. Call (850) 385-1538 to speak with Rabbi Stanley Garfein. The group meets Sundays at 11:00 AM at the home of Rabbi Garfein.

Tallahassee Jewish Genealogical Society - The Society meets once quarterly for programs that involve the sharing of family histories and trees that have been recovered after years of nepenthe (forgetfulness). Membership is $5. Contact Rabbi Garfein at (850) 385-1538 for more information. Meets Sundays at 2:00 PM, quarterly, in the Adult Education room.
